Last Saturday the kids and I went to put up the decorations. I stood on a choir chair to hang a poster (I had on my new doc marten sandals--which are bulky and weigh a ton) and it tipped over. I busted my tummy on the back of the chair, fell off, rolled down the stage and lay in a crumpled heap next to the piano. I'm sure it was hilarious and I certainly don't begrudge Chloe (who thankfully was the only person who saw it) for laughing..she DID ask if I was ok first :D course my mumbled answer should have told her that no I was not. I'll admit the getting up was a little slow, but shortly after I was back on the chair finishing the job. The next thing I know I fall off the same chair AGAIN--this time bumping my head hard on the stage step (which is carpeted thank all that is holy). I didn't feel too hot after that, but continued on...knowing this was the last day I had free to do this. I called my friend Emily and she brought in the reinforcements--we had it done and were home before 10:00 that night. Sunday morning I woke up so stiff and sore that I could hardly move. I have the most horrific looking bruise on my stomach where I fell onto the chair and my back where I landed on the stage. I feel much better now and the bruises are starting to turn green instead of the ugly wine color that they were.
I had two classes...the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, and then the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. All week long they made journal pages on index cards and put them into a 4x6 photo album. I only had each class for 20 minutes each night, so we knew we had to pick a simple project. I was afraid they might get bored with it, but they didn't. Each night they seemed to discover new ways of using the materials I had supplied them. I was impressed to say the least. Kids are so creative!
Here are the older kids playing with an assortment of images, stamps, stickers etc. Can I just say my stamp pads will never be the same?
Here are some of the pages the kids made. CatsPaw your cemetary angel was a big hit!
Here is the younger bunch of Artistes! You might recognize my kids (Chloe in the green Nike tee, and JJ in the red shirt). Sorry we can't see the other half of the room...there are 3 kids not in the picture.
I sent each child home with lots of stuff to play with so hopefully they'll journal all summer long and stay out of their Mama's hair.
Here is a stretch of the highway I drive from my house to the church near where we used to live (approx. 25 minute drive). This is the ONLY straight part of the road--you would not believe how curvy this highway is. You don't dare drive fast on it with a full tummy. It's that bad. Notice all the bugs on the windshield of Jeff's truck? :D It's June in the South--lots and lots and lots of BUGS. We got awful sick of this road by the time VBS was over.
This morning the kids and I slept through church. I could not believe it when I looked at the clock and saw that it was 11:30. We were all coughing, sneezing and wheezing yesterday, so before bedtime we all took a hit dose of Benadryl...Benadryl=zombie like sleep. Tis good stuff! So, after missing morning church I felt guilty all day and decided to go to Sunday night church. I thought the youth had choir practice at 5:30 and that the service started at 6:00. I had left here early with plans of stopping by my mother in law's house--which we did...when we got there we sat on the porch and visited awhile and then all of a sudden I got a big whiff of propane gas. My mother in law was in a very bad car accident several years ago, and since has lost her sense of taste and smell. I went into the kitchen and found a burner turned on her stove with no flame...GOD only knows how long it had been on. After visiting for a while longer we went to church. We walked in through the kitchen (usually before church everyone gathers in there) and no one was there, so we headed for the sanctuary and sat down. Little did we know the service was just ending! It actually started at 5pm and the youth has choir practice on Wednesday night NOT Sunday night. Aye yi yi-I'm losing my mind! After church we all went outside and ate some of the coldest/sweetest watermelon I've ever had. It's officially summer now.
I've got more to say but this is getting long and tedious so I'll hush for now.
